A trip to the Big Apple with an open bar tab and a plush hotel room sounds like the perfect escape to midwestern office drone, Marty Foster. All he has to do is blow an interview for a job he doesn’t want and then it’s on to his expenses paid vacation.
Unfortunately the Fates have other plans for him.
Minutes into his meeting with prestigious money management firm UlysCo, things go sideways. A thwarted pick-pocketing, some corporate blackmail, and an awkward fight outside a shady bar put Marty on the run. He manages to slip away to a midnight hiding spot where he can drown his sorrows in expensive wine and make plans to catch the next flight home.
But then things get weird.
Marty wakes with a nasty hangover, a mysterious beard, and a brand new tooth. Determined to figure it out from home, he heads for the nearest airport, only to be hijacked by a menacing receptionist. She chauffeurs him back to UlysCo’s offices where portfolio managers look for stock tips in bird entrails and Cupid dispenses troubling revelations from the back of an adult bookstore.
Someone really wants him to take that job, and the gods themselves will do anything to keep him in New York.

A God in Middle Management by Donn Hess was an enjoyable read. Hess provided a new take on ancient mythology as it was interwoven into the mundane of the present day business world. Uniquely, lesser known myths were used to center his tale. Not being from a large city like the setting for his book, I related to the main character's bewilderment of city life and could allow my mind to accept the story's plausible, even if fantastical, explanation of some of the absurdities of urban life for a traveling business man. After finishing the book, which I did in one setting, I found myself continuing the story in my head for several days, and I look forward to future installments. Additional editing would make the book an easier read.Product details

This novel is a brilliant marriage of ascerbic wit reminiscent of Carl Hiaasen and mythology. Mythology is not my cup of tea, hence my befuddlement in the first chapter. But, then I got into the rhythm of the dialogue and descriptions and was hooked. Could not put the kindle down. Further, it perfectly encapsulates what generously would be called the intrigue of corporate America...who's your ally...who's your foe...we've won...we've lost. Definitely recommend this and await the next installment!
So a confession here, I know the author and have enjoyed his sardonic wit for many a year. That being said, this first novel exceeded my expectations. His juxtaposition of greek mythology and corporate America was both suprising and effective. I was reminded of Neil Gaiman at times by the interesting and unexpected takes on ancient deities. These are not the Greek Gods from Bullfinch's Mythology. I also enjoyed his witty asides "I'm a auditor. Marketing asks me to believe the impossible all the time" or "I shoved him and he dropped to the ground like a prom dress at an after party". All said, this a fun and enjoyable read with enough twists to keep you guessing until the end. I'm hoping for a sequel, the ending left me wanting more. Well done!
Oh what fun! This story enchanted me right away - the author really paints pictures with his words - and I found myself laughing out loud and enjoying Marty from the start. Marty's adventures in NY quickly become layered and more fast-moving. He's the guy you want to sit near at your next boring work dinner...
This was a quick, entertaining read and I can't wait for the next book.
This is a fast-paced and clever novel that melds two seemingly disparate worlds. After finishing, I'm walking through cubicle-ville with just a little more skepticism, wondering if auditors are demigods and receptionists immortal beings. It's a great journey for anyone who is interested in mythology or has ever sat through a corporate training session and wondered, "How did I end up here?"
A must read!! This is a cleverly written book that makes you look at corporate America in a different and entertaining way. It's a quick read that hooks you so you can't put it down until you finish. I can't wait for the next one!
The book started out a little slow but when it got going it took off like a rocket. I felt the world could have been fleshed out a little more with more background but for the first book it was great. Good solid writing. I am looking forward to the next one.
This book sat in my to-read queue for a long time before I got to it. It was a little slow to start (you gotta get past the prologue), but once it got going, it was all I can do to hold on.
If you love Greek myths, snark, and sharp turns of phrase, then try this book. I can't wait for the next one!
