Victoria Van Allen was an elegant young woman who lived in a tasteful house just off of Fifth Avenue where she often hosted bridge parties attended by the most respectable people. Imagine their surprise when a guest, a wealthy millionaire, is stabbed to death at one of these salons, and Vicky Van, as she was known to her friends, disappears before the police can be summoned. Did she, as one of the waiters that fateful night alleges, wield the knife that killed the millionaire, and who, really, is …Vicky Van?

A vintage work by the prolific Carolyn Wells, this is a quite readable puzzler. It is an example of what I would call, non-violent murder mysteries, such as written by Agatha Christie, Essentially what we get is an early build-up, the murder, and the rest is a matter of Who Dun It and Where is the leading Suspect. The language and sentiments are sometimes what some would term dated, but I did not have any problem about that. There are a number of well-drawn characters and a super-sleuth (with a youthful protege, who makes major contributions to the investigation). While crucial to the solution, the super-sleuth plays a surprisingly small part in the book. The writing is clear, the plot line tricky but not complicated, the momentum nicely maintained. I would commend this to youthful readers who are not put off by the age of the book and to most adults who take to the "cozy" sub-genre.

Vicky Van Carolyn Wells 9781937022044 Books Reviews

The writing is good, sometimes very pleasant, and that's not insignificant. But there's no real mystery here, and the characters are cardboard. And as usual in the Stone mysteries, the "lower class" Fibsy does most of the sleuthing, but is treated as a mere underling.
This was quite a mystery. But I guessed correctly that..the conclusion. Without giving any clues away to future readers, I mean that I solved certain parts of this mystery before it was made known. I almost solved this mystery plain and simple. But you beat me to it detective.
I recommend this for anyone who thinks they can solve a murder mystery.
Kept me reading but a little disappointed in the solution. I suppose it can happen but a stretch.
I really enjoyed this book. Can't go wrong with Carolyn Wells.
Wow, talk about a mystery with twists and turns. I enjoyed this story and I have to admit the writers of long ago are very good. I couldn't put it down until I had finished it.
I love a good mystery. Carolyn Wells wrote at the beginning of the last century. Things were different then. Reading one of her mysteries is like a very pleasnt trip into the past.
